Making active efforts for our people and the planet

Our Health, Safety & Environment initiatives are designed to build a culture of care, learning, and responsibility across every jobsite and office. Each program supports our commitment to protecting people, strengthening behaviours, and reducing our environmental impact.

In this section:

Small actions. Real improvements.

Together, we build a safer and better tomorrow.

Initiatives that support our people and our planet

WE CARE logo and hands shaking below

WeCare and CareFactor are the foundation of our safety culture. These programs help us focus on behaviours, personal responsibility, and looking out for one another. It’s about creating a workplace where everyone feels safe to speak up, support their team, and make thoughtful decisions.

#green is great on a green background shape

An internal awareness campaign that encourages everyday eco-actions on site and in the office, such as reducing waste, recycling properly, conserving water, and choosing low-impact materials. Small habits lead to meaningful collective impact.

Through our partnership with Project Rescue Ocean, teams participate in shoreline clean-ups, waste-removal events, and awareness activities. Better Earth by SBC strengthens our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Good Catches encourage employees to report hazards, near misses, unsafe conditions, and improvement opportunities before an incident occurs.

Using a simple QR code, teams can quickly flag concerns in real time. Each Good Catch helps prevent injuries, protect operations, and strengthen our culture of learning and shared responsibility.

TEAM UP FOR SAFETY and an illustration of two people giving a high five

Team Up for Safety reinforces collaboration on site. Crews review tasks together, challenge assumptions, and make sure everyone understands the controls needed for a safe execution. When teams plan together, they work safer and smarter.

THUMBS UP FOR SAFE ACCESS and an illustration of a person doing thumbs up

A simple visual reminder used across jobsites to ensure access points are inspected and safe to use. Before entering or using any pathway, stairs, platform, or equipment, workers give a “thumbs up” to confirm that the area is clear, stable, and properly secured.

E-Concerned provides an easy way for employees to report environmental concerns directly to the HSE team. Whether it’s spills, improper waste handling, or opportunities for improvement, we encourage everyone to speak up so we can act quickly and responsibly.

ecofuel logo and the text save energy

Our EcoFuel initiative focuses on reducing emissions by gradually integrating sustainable fuels, optimizing equipment usage, and monitoring consumption. This helps us lower our carbon footprint while maintaining operational performance.

Sitting Around? Shut 'em down with a car key illustration

A simple but effective program reminding teams to shut off engines when equipment is not in use. Reducing idling improves air quality, cuts emissions, and saves fuel, benefiting both the environment and our communities.

Our Circular Economy initiative focuses on reducing waste and extending the life of materials through responsible reuse and recycling. This includes PPE recycling programs and the growing use of recycled and reusable steel through approved suppliers. By keeping materials in use for longer and reducing reliance on virgin resources, we support more sustainable construction practices across our operations.

The 4Ds initiative encourages teams to pause and ask four simple questions before and during work: Is this Dumb? Dangerous? Difficult? Different?

By prompting these questions, teams can identify risks, unclear conditions, or unusual situations early. This shared habit supports better decisions, open communication, and safer execution by addressing issues before they escalate.

Exegy supports the use of low-carbon concrete and grout solutions to reduce the environmental impact of foundation works where practical. By prioritizing optimized mix designs and alternative binders, Exegy helps lower CO₂ emissions while maintaining performance, durability, and constructability. This initiative supports our goal of increasing low-carbon concrete usage across our projects.

HSE Hero of the Month

Each month, we highlight an employee who demonstrates exceptional commitment to safety or environmental responsibility. These recognitions celebrate positive actions, leadership, and the behaviours we want to see across all SBC sites.
