Project Description

Project Scope

As part of the Ontario Line South project, Soletanche Bachy Canada delivered excavation support and shaft construction works for the Moss Park and Corktown stations in downtown Toronto.

The works were carried out in a dense urban environment with complex ground conditions, including fill materials, glacial till with cobbles and boulders, and high groundwater levels influenced by proximity to Lake Ontario and historic waterfront areas.

To support the construction of underground transit infrastructure, SB Canada installed secant pile walls, structural elements, and multi-level bracing systems to enable safe excavation and maintain ground stability.

Solution

Soletanche Bachy Canada implemented secant pile wall systems and shaft construction techniques to support deep excavations at both stations.

At Moss Park Station, multi-level bracing systems were installed to support excavation works, while at Corktown Station, secant piles were used to construct shafts for station development and future tunnelling operations.

The works required precise drilling and installation methods to manage variable soil conditions and maintain alignment in a constrained urban setting, ensuring safe and efficient execution.

Sustainable development

Environmental protection and community considerations were integrated throughout project execution.

Dust suppression and noise-reduction measures were implemented to minimize disruption in surrounding urban areas. Groundwater monitoring and controlled drilling practices helped protect nearby infrastructure and maintain excavation stability.

A site-specific environmental plan ensured compliance with regulations and supported responsible management of construction impacts.

Project Outcome

The Ontario Line stations represent a critical component of Toronto’s future transit network. Through the delivery of secant pile shafts and excavation support systems, Soletanche Bachy Canada enabled the safe construction of two key stations along the new line.

By adapting construction methods to challenging ground conditions and a dense urban environment, the team delivered reliable excavation support systems that allowed subsequent station and tunnelling works to proceed safely and efficiently.

Key takeaways

  • Successful delivery of deep excavation systems in dense urban conditions
  • Secant pile shaft execution for major transit infrastructure
  • Adapted construction methods to manage groundwater and complex soils
  • Safe execution in proximity to existing buildings and infrastructure
